A CLEAR SOLUTION TO WATER SCARCITY 02-01

A CLEAR SOLUTION TO WATER SCARCITY

Anu Sridharan has a goal to solve the problem of intermittent water in India. Many residents do not know when water will be available, wasting valuable time waiting at home for the water to come on. As a New Leader, Anu hopes to create a brighter future for everyone who suffers from the problem.

Intermittent water supply is the norm for 90% of Asia and 33% of cities in Africa and Latin America. This means millions of households do not have the luxury of clean tap water whenever they want it. In India, many families only get water every few days, storing it for drinking, cooking and washing, before the supply is cut off again. With little idea of when water will next come through, many stay in their homes for hours or even days at a time, waiting for water.

Anu founded NextDrop to improve communication between governments, citizens and water suppliers so households know when they are next getting water. Residents now receive text messages telling them when and for how long water will be available. Engineers can also use this information to help bring infrastructure to areas who need it most, and avoid further water shortages to families.
Anu’s drive and innovative approach to global issues saw her selected as a Unilever Sustainable Living Young Entrepreneurs Awards Finalist. Unilever wants to ensure 500 million people have access to clean drinking water by 2020, and Anu’s passion and leadership qualities made her a worthy finalist; sharing a vision for a world where no one has to wait for water.

Solutions like NextDrop are part of a global mission to improve access to this most basic of human rights. Changing the world does not always require big change; sometimes we just have to look at something with fresh eyes.
